Coastal Carolina Baseball's Meo Named a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist
DURHAM, N.C. – Coastal Carolina University sophomore pitcher Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) has been named as one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, it was announced today by USA Baseball.
Meo is 13-1 with a 1.80 earned-run average for the number four national seed Chanticleers this season. Meo has 88 strikeouts and a .216 opponent’s batting average in 90 innings this year. He also was a unanimous choice for Big South Player of the Year and was named to the All-Big South Tournament Team. Meo also is a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy. He tied a career high with 10 strikeouts at Radford May 20 and gave up just one earned run in 8.2 innings against San Diego March 28.
In 2007, USA Baseball instituted a new selection and balloting procedure for the most prestigious award in amateur baseball, and it will follow the same model again in 2010. After accepting nominations from sports information directors across the country, a committee voted to determine the 30 semifinalists. The names of the 30 semifinalists will now be forwarded to a group of nearly 200 voters which will select the five finalists and the eventual winner. Beginning today fans will also be able to vote on the 2010 GSA by visiting GoldenSpikesAward.com and selecting their favorite amateur player.
Coastal Carolina will open the 2010 Myrtle Beach Regional Friday, June 4 against Stony Brook. Game time is at 1 p.m., at BB&T Coastal Field.
