Chase Elliott looking to follow in his father’s footsteps at Rockingham
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 10, 2010) – In his career, Bill Elliott found victory lane four times at Rockingham.
This weekend, his 14-year old son Chase will look to replicate dad’s success at the venerable one-mile oval. The younger Elliott is looking to tame the Rock in Friday’s Sonoco National Tour race and Saturday’s USARacing Pro Cup Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service.
“The Sonoco race is going to be a challenge with the cars with limited power with the crate engines that they use for the series,” said Bill Elliott.
While Rockingham’s high banked one-mile oval is a larger track than what Chase is used to running, the youngster has still tackled some failry difficult circuits in his burgeoning career and run well.
“Chase has run well at Pensacola, South Georgia Speedway, Dillon (S.C.), Montgomery, Winchester and some other really tough tracks,” said Elliott. “While Rockingham presents some unique challenges for drivers, he’s prepared for it.”
As for the advice that the veteran driver can impart on his son, Bill believes it ends when Chase takes the track.
“You can tell them only so much then they are going to do what they want,” he said. “It’s like anything else with your kids, they are going to do it how they want to.”
Racing action for the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service weekend gets underway on Thursday, May 13 with practice and qualifying for the Friday, May 14 running of the Sonoco National Tour race. The Sunoco National Tour cars will take the green flag for their 100-lap shootout immediately following USAR Pro Cup and UARA qualifying (approximately 4:30 pm). The UARA portion of the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service takes the green flag on Saturday, May 15 at 11 am with the USAR Pro Cup to follow at approximately 1 pm.
